Punjab Records 18?crease in Power Theft Cases, PSPCL Reports

Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) reports a notable 18% decline in power theft cases for the year 2023, with 7,167 incidents recorded until November 30, compared to 8,706 during the same period last year. PSPCL officials attribute this positive trend to the constant vigilance of the corporation's enforcement wing and the implementation of smart meters, along with the incentive of the free electricity scheme dissuading smaller consumers from bypassing norms.

Enforcement and smart meters make a mark

With the enforcement wing maintaining constant vigilance and the introduction of smart meters, power theft incidents decreased, with the highest number of cases reported in November at 783. PSPCL officials highlight that losses due to power thefts cost the corporation approximately ₹2,000 crore annually. Despite challenges in certain zones like Amritsar, where 30% losses were noted, and Bathinda, where the percentage stood at 25.34, overall progress is evident. PSPCL has registered 4,396 FIRs for power thefts, terminated 67 private meters, and identified Bhikhiwind, Zira, and Patti divisions as facing the highest losses due to power thefts, totaling over ₹490 crores this year. Challenges persist, such as resistance from farmer unions against the installation of smart meters, and instances of officials facing transfers for acting against power thefts, impacting morale.
